MARVEL UK HANDBOOK: MYS-TECH (Marvel UK)

THE ROAD TO THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR:
THE MARVEL UK HANDBOOK

The four-part DEATH'S HEAD II limited series from 1993 not only set out the Marvel UK house style (a supremely nineties mix of biceps, boobs, bums and enormous guns) but also featured a series of plugs for the upcoming launch of the five "OVERKILL" books (the strips that would fly solo in the States but populate the anthology fortnightly in the UK).

This is a nice backgrounder to MyS-TECH, prime big-bads of the sub-universe.

1983: THE EAGLE COLLECTION: THE FISTS OF DANNY PYKE (IPC)

I'd previously assumed that the occasionally-scheduled THE EAGLE COLLECTION full-page pin-ups had started in January 1984.  I got that spectacularly wrong and - as a result - I'm not posting these in chronological order.  Whoops.

This IS the first in the series and appeared in EAGLE cover-dated 15 October 1983.

1986: BIGGLES MOVIE PROMO-STRIP - PART FIVE (IPC)

Here is the fifth - and final - frenetic part of the BIGGLES movie promo-strip from May 1986.  This first appeared in EAGLE cover-dated 31 May 1986.

The movie can be acquired pretty cheaply on DVD and I would recommend it.  It's not great by any means but its a fun bit of disposable fluff.

1986: DICEMAN ISSUE 3 HOUSE AD (IPC)

Once again, EAGLE had to surrender the centre pages of the issue cover-dated 7 June 1986 in deference to the greater good of the IPC Youth Group.  This time: another four-page plug for the third issue of glossy 2000AD Role Playing spin-off DICEMAN.

The line-up this time was - again - the mix of the familiar (Rogue Trooper and Torquemada) and the new (the not-at-all inspired by Indiana Jones Rick Fortune).

Roll your dice....

1986: EAGLE JUNE COVER GALLERY (IPC)

Can you spot the difference?  Look closely at the EAGLE covers for issues 221 and 222...

Yup, the issue cover-dated 14 June 1986 was the last to appear under the EAGLE AND TIGER masthead, ending the run of the once-distinguished weekly that launched in September 1954 and (well past its prime) merged with the Eagle in March 1985.

The moment had already been prepared for with a conspicuous reduction in the size of Tiger's logo a few months earlier and - at first glance - the final disappearance barely registers.

1986: BIGGLES MOVIE PROMO-STRIP - PART FOUR

This is the fourth (of five) instalment of the BIGGLES promo-strip, published through May 1986, plugging the theatrical release of the British adventure movie.

Final part tomorrow...

- To Be Concluded -

1990: STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION HOUSE AD (Marvel UK)

This is a jokey Marvel UK House Ad, from December 1990, promoting their just-launched STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION fortnightly comic/ magazine.

Marvel seemed to really miss the mark with this one.  I think fans were hoping/ expecting something along the lines of DOCTOR WHO MAGAZINE: a text-centric magazine dedicated to the still-in-production TV show with a comic strip element.  Ironically, just the mix and formula that Titan Magazines followed when they launched their own TREK magazine a few years later (a formula also successfully applied to their STAR WARS and BABYLON FIVE magazines amongst others).

But Marvel chased a younger audience with an undemanding line-up of reprinted DC comics material (beginning with reprints of the six issue limited series, largely produced before the show had even started shooting) backed-up by text features lifted from Starlog's Official Magazine (Marvel didn't even change the page layouts, they just ran them as-is).

Older fans with access to a local comic book store - and eager for anything TNG prior to the show's UK TV debut - would have already been familiar with both.  Marvel's only new contributions: a contents page, a letters page and some truly dire covers (I'll do a cover gallery soon).

After twenty-odd issues Marvel pulled their favoured trick of cutting the frequency to monthly in an attempt to stabilise sales and make the economics work (see also: DOCTOR WHO, FUTURE TENSE, RAMPAGE and OVERKILL amongst others).  The relaunch, pitched at more "serious" fans boasted better cover designs (including a new logo), a more appealing balance of text features and comic strip and more UK-originated text features.

The reboot was an improvement but, by that point, the damage was done and ST:TNG was squeezed out by superior coverage in British magazines like TV ZONE, STARBURST and DWB and imports like the Official Magazine and STARLOG itself (which seemed to have unlimited on-set access and at least one TNG feature per issue).

1992: GENESIS 92 HOUSE AD (Marvel UK)

THE ROAD TO THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR:
THE MARVEL UK UNIVERSE BEGINS...

This was one of the first sightings of the first wave of Marvel UK characters: as seen in this House Ad from the back pages of the DEATH'S HEAD II limited series back in 1992.

1976: MARVEL BICENTENNIAL CALENDAR HOUSE AD (Marvel UK)

I spotted the first 2014 calendars on sale yesterday (it's August guys!) so I went scurrying back to the STARLOGGED digital vaults and unearthed this scan, from January 1976, giving British Marvelettes a chance to mail away for the MARVEL BICENTENNIAL CALENDAR 1976 (better hurry, by the time they've processed and despatched it... it'll be March already!) and Stan Lee's legendary tome SON OF ORIGINS OF MARVEL COMICS.

The calendar - of course - marks the United States bicentennial, not Marvel's.  Although, the speed that they jumped from their 25th anniversary (1986) to their 75th (2009) suggests that temporal shenanigans makes anything possible...

1986: BIGGLES MOVIE PROMO-STRIP - PART THREE

BIGGLES IS YOUR TIME TWIN!

This is the third part of the BIGGLES movie preview promo strip which appeared in half-page chunks in the EAGLE during May 1986.  This instalment was published in the issue cover-dated the 17th.
