The shock of the report (which then - as now - never seemed to be balanced) and the realisation that you were sitting - albeit at the periphery - at the heart of a news story (if that's not a contradiction) that was unravelling fast as resignations followed in quick succession.

I think that day was a defining one for the BBC. Up until that point (rightly or wrongly), the Corporation had become an expanding and confident organisation that was embracing the new potential of digital media and - importantly - serving a diverse audience at home and abroad. There was a recently-published TIME or NEWSWEEK magazine cover (I have it somewhere) which said exactly that.

After Hutton, the BBC suddenly became apologetic and diminished. Indeed, in the rush to demonstrate contrition, it went through another round of downsizing including the sell-off (which - in reality - I suspect was already on-the-cards and simply accelerated in the regime change) of the department I worked for (although my job title, role, salary and desk never changed).SLOW ROBOThttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15891511135128944714noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6024401572816020459.post-69728185835219367272013-08-22T15:24:30.631+01:002013-08-22T15:24:30.631+01:00I well remember Greg Dyke resigning/being forced t...I well remember Greg Dyke resigning/being forced to resign - it was disgusting that he had to resign while Blair got away with it. As a life-long supporter of Labour it was one of the many, many things that led to my total disillusion with them. But most people trust the BBC and always will trust them rather than lying, conniving politicians.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
