1989: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST AT MARVEL UK

As a follow-up to Slow Robot's coverage of comic book adaptations of the CBS TV series BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, here's Marvel UK's house ad for the UK edition of PORTRAIT OF LOVE, originally published in the United States by First Comics.  The advert appeared in M-UK titles around November 1989.

1985/86: THE A-TEAM AT MARVEL UK

Slow Robot loves it when a plan comes together.  We've already covered the three issue US THE A-TEAM limited series, based on the TV action show.  Here's how Marvel UK reprinted the same material:

THE A-TEAM SUMMER SPECIAL
1985
Reprints US limited series 1 & 2.

Full details of Marvel's 1985 Summer Specials can be found here.

THE A-TEAM SPECIAL
ISSUE 2
1982
Reprints US limited series issue 3.

THE A-TEAM ANNUAL 1990
Published 1989.
Reprints US limited series 2 & 3.
Previous annuals were published by World Distributors.

As with BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, M-UK's license wasn't exclusive and a rival, UK-created, adaptation appeared first in the ailing TV COMIC and then, after its first home was cancelled, in LOOK IN.

INDIANA JONES AT MARVEL UK

For Slow Robot's 100th posting (hurrah), it seemed appropriate to celebrate another hero who specialises in unearthing old stuff: Indiana Jones.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK
1981

M-UK reprinted MARVEL SUPER SPECIAL 18 as RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK ANNUAL 1982, published in 1981.

STAR WARS Monthly
ISSUE 167
March 1983

THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF INDIANA JONES makes its UK debut as the back-up strip in STAR WARS monthly.

The strip continued into RETURN OF THE JEDI weekly.

SPIDER-MAN
ISSUE 590
27 June 1984

The TEMPLE OF DOOM movie adaptation was serialised as a back-up strip in the SPIDER-MAN weekly.

INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM
1985

Marvel's film adaptation was reprinted as the TEMPLE OF DOOM ANNUAL 1985, published in 1984.

INDIANA JONES Monthly
ISSUE 1
October 1984

The TEMPLE OF DOOM movie adaptation got a second UK comics outing, mere weeks after the end of its run in SPIDER-MAN, in M-UK'S INDIANA JONES solo title.  The new monthly also, predictably, reprinted THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF INDIANA JONES.

The free sticker (shown larger than actual size) loosely inserted into issue 1 (and easily lost).

INDIANA JONES HOUSE ADVERT featured in various other M-UK titles.

1996: MARVEL ACTION HOUR - MARVEL UK EDITION

In October 1996, Marvel UK had one last crack at a traditional UK superhero comic.  The fortnightly MARVEL ACTION HOUR was, of course, based on the animated TV series and (presumably) coincided with the show's broadcast on British TV.

Surprisingly, neither the FANTASTIC FOUR nor IRON MAN contents were reprints of the US Action Hour comics (one for each segment and each lasting eight issues, dated November 1994 to June 1995) which were set in the TV continuity.

Instead, the strips reprinted had first appeared in the main FF and IM comics, dating from 1979 and 1982 respectively.

Alan Craddock supplied new splash-page style covers (which, weirdly, included the credits for the featured strips).

The freebies, cover-mounted to 1-2 and 4, were bargain-basement sweets, suggesting M-UK's free gift budget was exhausted.

A fifth issue was previewed but never published.
