  • Another cover that doesn’t entirely faithfully reflect events in the movie.. or the adaptation.
  • Han shoots first.
  • Jabba the Hut (single ‘t’)

  • One of the most fondly remembered of the back-up strips.
  • Early evidence of mass-market merchandising (the jigsaws and the KP mailaway)
  • Glossary reference to ‘X-Fighters’, which may explain the source of Marvel’s incorrect naming of the first issue freebie.

MEANWHILE… A LONG TIME AGO:

  • Episode 4 of DOCTOR WHO: THE INVASION OF TIME aired on Saturday 25 February.
  • 2000AD prog 54 went on sale the same day with the usual line-up.

  • The following Monday, the 27th, saw ‘Project Avalon’, the ninth episode of BLAKE’S SEVEN air on BBC ONE.
  • Over in the States, WONDER WOMAN skipped a couple of weeks with no new episodes airing between 17 February and 3 March.
  • Also stateside, the last season of THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN was drawing to a conclusion with the two-part adventure ‘Date With Danger’ airing on the 20th and 27th.
  • Spin-off THE BIONIC WOMAN, also coming to the end of its run, played the episode ‘Which One is Jamie’ on the 25th.

  1. And with Churchillian fervour, Luke declares that they will ' fight - to the last man ! " ( and woman if Leia were on board )

Ah yes from the good old days of overly dramatic m-uk covers.

  2. I had the SW jigsaws advertised here. One of my teachers at primary school confiscated the one with R2 & C3-PO on Tattoine and I never got it back!

    ReplyDelete
  3. Maybe that teacher was also a fan of star wars and gave the jigsaw to their own kids ?

I brought the stormtrooper pencil case to school but mislaid it at some point.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I had the Han Solo pencil case! I can still smell it. :)

  5. Unrelated Marvel UK stuff that may be of interest ...
This article from last week details massive changes to a UK reprinting of a Hulk story. Fascinating stuff ...
Hulk Vs Captain Marvel in UK reprint

(Slow, if you want to add a proper blog entry linking to this so more people see it, I think readers of your fabulous blog would be interested)

  6. Thanks for the link Krusty.

I've added some new material to my own blog, Ed's Emporium.

  7. The new BACK ISSUE has a lovely retrospective on the great Archie Goodwin whose tenure on the original marvel star wars comic is still unmatched to this day.

  8. *** NME MAGAZINE TO CEASE PUBLICATION ***

And so yet another print edition bites the dust :

  9. the new issue of TOTAL FILM comes double packaged with THE ART OF STAR WARS bookazine.

I can only assume that future publishing have a lot of spare copies they want to shift.

Its worth noting here that there don't seem to be as many new specials and bookazines produced now. Its just reprints mostly and even SCI-FI ICONS has ceased publication.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Indeed. It is very noticable that bookazines and specials seem to have gone into sharp decline since a burst of activity at tbe tailend of last year. Maybe tbe retailers have reached satuation or publishers are keeping them on sale EVEN longer. Only Panini seems to be ploding on... With their WHO spin-offs.

RADIO TIMES has a DAD'S ARMY one-shot planned for tbe end of the month. It sounds like it will use a lot of previously unpublished stills from their vaults.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Not a huge surprise on the SCI-FI ICONS front... It seemed to be deselected from the bulk of WHS stores a while back and only survived in a few travel outlets.

    ReplyDelete
  12. HORRORVILLE (is that right?) also seems to have stopped publishing new issues... Although they may be on an erratic only-when-we-have-something-to-talk-about schedule.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The problem also with specials is the lack of notice regarding cancellation.

    They just stop publishing.

I've only ever found SCI-FI ICONS in the one shop - my local newsagent.

Yes it looks as if HORRORVILLE has gone to that great magazine shelf in the sky.

  14. out today - the new issue of JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE has a nice article on CHARLEYS WAR , the meg is heading for its 400th issue while SFX reaches their 300th next month.

and EMPIRE have another biggie due tomorrow - the main issue on INFINITY WAR plus an extra mag on the marvel movie universe. I assume this will come polybagged.

  15. For reasons that escape me, the PREVIEWS catalogue has slightly re-designed its layout.

In effect, this means there is no longer a single section for books and magazines. Instead , they are scattered all over the catalogue which makes them much harder to find.

    ReplyDelete
  16. EMPIRE are launching a spin-off title called PILOT TV as seen here :

    https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/pilot-tv-magazine-launching-team-behind-empire/

    ReplyDelete
  17. the new issue of WARGAMES ILLUSTRATED has a 2 page article on JOHNNY RED.

    ReplyDelete
  18. PILOT TV seems pretty good. Almost like THE BOX but with a lot less nostalgia.

Conspicuously absent is any mention of a second issue. Or must-see shows like the DYNASTY reboot and RIVERDALE. Have they no taste?!?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I've yet to find it in the shops.

Maybe they are hedging their bets and waiting to see the sales figures before producing a second issue.

The bar code lists it as both issue 0 and 01.

And nice to see FILMFAX is still publishing and on improved quality paper.

Although technically , the title is now FILMFAX Plus .

    ReplyDelete
  25. btw, did you know that the publishers of FILMFAX also once produced FANTASTIC FILMS ?

  26. The PREVIEWS catalogue continues to make changes.

Now the Dc section comes as a seperate publication which means there are now three supplements in addition to the main catalogue - MARVEL PREVIEWS, DC PREVIEWS and IMAGE PLUS.

Also out today - the 300th issue of SFX which includes my own contribution in the letter pages.

    more on this here :

  27. Congratulations on your letter, Ed - I've just bought SFX #300 but I haven't read it yet.

    And happy birthday !!

    ReplyDelete
  28. RIP MICHAEL ANDERSON

Director of at least two stone cold sci-fi classics -

LOGAN'S RUN and THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES.

see more on my blog here :

  29. Out today - COMIC SCENE - a new uk mag which seems to have a nice mix of articles.

Issue 1 covers Roy of the rovers and dr who among other subjects.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I love Logan's Run - I most recently watched it a couple of years ago on YouTube. Isn't a remake planned or something?

Not sure I agree that The Martian Chronicles is the finest sci-fi ever filmed for TV. Both I and my late father thought it was a bit dull - but that was in distant 1981, perhaps I'd think differently if I watched the Martian Chronicles now :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well its better than the Logan's run tv show that's for sure !

But seriously ,you should give it another go, it has more than stood the test of time.

Yes there have been rumors of a new version of Logan's Run but so far - nothing has happened.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Nice to see that the BATMAN / JUDGE DREDD cross-overs you covered here before have now been re-released as a digest paperback.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Slim pickings this week (which is fine by me as I seem to have spent a lot on old media recently) but the new issue of INFINITY is always welcome. And the Panini SPIDER-MAN CE has rebooted YET AGAIN.

I rewatched THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES for the first time in decades a couple of years ago and found it an enjoyable slow-burn watch marred only by some obvious model work.

I picked up a copy of the LOGAN'S RUN movie on BR for £6 in Fopp this very day. The TV show is available on R1 DVD.

BATTLESTAR 78 is coming to FORCES TV in the UK.

I got a signed copy of the JD/ BATMAN digest paperback from FP a few weeks ago. Pretty cheap too.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES recently, that would have been the dvd release ?

A slow burn watch is a fairly apt description.

Agreed about the model work especially for the martian sand ships which seem quaint by todays standards but it only adds to the shows charm.

I've posted some material about the mini-series on my blog here :

    https://edsemporioum.blogspot.ie/2018/05/the-martian-chronicles-in-future.html

    and here :

  35. out today in my FP :

THE LAST JEDI OFFICIAL MOVIE COMPANINON

a sort of follow up to last year's souvenir mag.

    ReplyDelete
  36. RIP HARLAN ELLISON

  37. RIP STEVE DITKO

His work on SPIDER-MAN alone earns him a place in the hall of fame but he also worked on many other diverse titles such as MACHINE MAN and MICRONAUTS.

Not to mention the final issue runs of ROM and INDIANA JONES.

    ReplyDelete
  38. the new issue of SFX is out today but I've only just read the previous one which has a nice article on Dr Who fanzines, some of which have been covered on this blog such as THE FRAME and DWB.

the article can be viewed here :

    https://edsemporioum.blogspot.com/2018/07/who-zines-in-sfx.html

    ReplyDelete
  39. Along with their bookazine special on DAD'S ARMY, the current issue of THE RADIO TIMES has a great cover story on the classic tv show.

And I just came across the BEANO AT 80 special in my local newsagents and its a must read for anyone with an interest in the history of British comics.

Hope you are all well - Slow, Krusty et al.

    ReplyDelete
  40. the new DR WHO SPECIAL looks very promising with lots of articles on fandom and who-zines.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It really is a superb read and what really struck me was just how many of those involved in early Who fandom went on to contribute so much to STARBURST magazine in the Visual Imagination era, especially its editor / publisher Stephen Payne and David Howe who edited the book column.

    ReplyDelete
  42. RIP JACQUELINE PEARCE

    Servalan from BLAKES 7

    ReplyDelete
  43. RIP ZIENIA MERTON

Several magazine milestones have been reached this week :

    JUDGE DREDD MEGAZINE issue 400

SCI-FI NOW issue 150 which comes bagged with a free poster showing all the previous issues covers.

Hmm I seem to remember something similar with issue 150 of SFX.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Just a quick heads up for anyone still checking in here :

Without any fanfare, SKY ONE have begun screening season one of BABYLON 5 on weekday mornings.

For a show that's more than 20 years old, it holds up remarkably well.

    ReplyDelete
