1979: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA MARVEL SUPER SPECIAL UK HOUSE AD (Marvel UK)

From April 1979: a rare MARVEL UK House Ad (from an issue of STARBURST) for imported copies of the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA edition of MARVEL SUPER SPECIAL.

Dez Skinn wasn't exactly won over by the good ship Galactica so his Annex of Ideas didn't go all-out to flog the Marvel tie-in in the UK.  His enthusiasm may have been further dampened by the rival strip that was running at this time (thanks to a quirk in the licensing deal... facilitated by ITV's early purchase of the broadcast rights... which they then sat on for over a year) in LOOK-IN.

Marvel UK never bothered with a British edition of the movie adaptation (they didn't have the rights to publish annuals based on the show, depriving them of another possible outlet) and relied on imported copies of the US editions (magazine, treasury and paperback) to meet demand.  April '79 roughly coincides with the UK theatrical release of the faux feature film pilot.

The strips made their official UK debut in STAR HEROES WINTER SPECIAL towards the end of the year but the test-the-waters one-shot skipped straight onto rerunning the 4th and 5th issues of the US run, skipping the extended (and fixed) rerun of the pilot in the first three issues.  That version didn't see a UK edition for decades: Titan eventually collected it in the first of two trade paperback compilations of the Marvel material that they released (and then quickly remaindered) to coincide with the new series and the launch of their magazine spin-off.

1978: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA SUPER SPECIAL PORTFOLIO (Marvel Comics)

This is the portfolio of pin-up pages that were published in Marvel's BATTLESTAR GALACTICA SUPER SPECIAL (the 8th if you are keeping count) , which also appeared in Treasury and Paperback formats.

All of which are, unsurprisingly, based on the show's opening episode (if only the visuals had actually had been as impressive as Dave Cockrum's Cylon attack, top).

When the adaptation of the pilot/ movie was reworked and expanded (and fixed!) for the first three issues of Marvel's regular book, these pages weren't ported across.

1982: DRAGONSLAYER MOVIE ONE-SHOT (Marvel UK)

This is the British edition of Marvel's DRAGONSLAYER movie adaptation, published by Marvel UK in 1982.

The strip first appeared, behind a different cover, in the 20th issue of MARVEL SUPER SPECIAL as well as being split across a two issue US limited series.

Marvel London, presumably thinking they had stumbled onto the next big thing, also published a one-shot Poster magazine based on the film.

*** Originally published to coincide with the movie (and the relaunch of the comic), the adaptation appeared again in the weekly's final months.

Marvel's US distribution of the Super Special created an unexpected headache because, inadvertently, copies shipped earlier than planned and went on sale too early, revealing the story line (and its revelations) before Lucasfilm planned.  Mark Hammill apparently spotted copies on-sale and blew the whistle.

The proliferation of limited series meant this was the first Star Wars movie adaptation from Marvel to appear outside the normal run of the US monthly comic book.

MARVEL SUPER SPECIAL - PART ONE

In the seventies and eighties, Marvel loved their movie adaptations.  After hitting pay-dirt with their STAR WARS comics, Marvel rushed to make sure they secured as many licenses as possible in the hopes that one would spawn the next-big-thing (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: maybe, ANNIE: maybe not).

The irregularly scheduled full-colour MARVEL SUPER SPECIAL magazine was the perfect vehicle for these adaptations, publishing the whole story in a single issue in a superior format.

The MSS didn't start as a home for movie adaptations (although the first two were based on non-Marvel properties) but they quickly became the main attraction with only occasional issues featuring Marvel characters (and never their super heroes or other characters from the main four-colour line).

The movie adaptations, from numerous creative teams, were, for deadline reasons, often based on shooting scripts (or just earlier drafts of the script) and not the final edit of the movie.  These inadvertently provide a fascinating insight into how a movie was intended to be structured before it entered the edited suite.  Conversely, Marvel's creators were occasionally forced to make their own edits in order to make the movie work in comics form.

Some MSS were imported and distributed widely in the UK (the CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND edition was heavily plugged in Marvel's UK weeklies) whilst others didn't cross the Atlantic in any great numbers either because of lack of interest (not every film Marvel adapted became a hit) or because Marvel UK planned their own edition (often as a hardback annual).

SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND, starring the Bee Gees, was considered such a stinker that Marvel didn't even bother to publish it although foreign language editions (French, Japanese and Dutch) did appear under license.

Marvel managed to stretch the MSS material as far as possible and often reissued the same material as a limited series (often with new covers and additional interior artwork), treasury editions or paperbacks (with panels split over far more pages to ensure they remained legible).

The MSS format was phased-out in the eighties (appropriately, the HOWARD THE DUCK movie adaptation was the final nail in the coffin) as movie adaptations became less attractive in the age of VHS.  However, Marvel (and other publishers) did continue to issue the occasional comic book version of films.

In this guide we've noted other US and UK editions published DURING the Slow-Robot era (roughly 1972-1995).  Some (like KISS, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and, of course, STAR WARS) have been issued more recently.

Famously, KISS mixed their blood with the ink used to print this magazine.

June 1978

OTHER EDITIONS:
MARVEL SPECIAL EDITION: CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND Treasury Edition* (US)
* Not part of the numbered Treasury Edition series.

Copies were imported into the UK and promoted in the Marvel UK weeklies.

August 1978

Biography of the band.

October 1978

December 1978

French edition - Not released in the US or UK.
1979
January 1979

Because of deadline issues, this adaptation had to be produced while the pilot movie, Saga of a Star World, was still shooting.  It contains a number of plotting and artwork discrepancies compared with the final broadcast version. These were fixed for the version serialised in the first three issues of the regular Marvel monthly.

OTHER EDITIONS:
